Our comprehensive 4th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) course is designed to build confident readers and skilled writers. This 36-week curriculum is aligned with Common Core State Standards and perfect for homeschoolers, after-school enrichment, or supplemental support. Students meet twice per week for 45-minute lessons that blend reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills.

Each week includes carefully planned activities that develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing in a structured, engaging way. Throughout the year, students will explore a variety of texts and genres including fairy tales, poetry, nonfiction, biographies, and persuasive writing.

Unit 1: Building Strong Foundations

  • Predicting, sequencing, and comparing texts

  • Exploring fairy tales, realistic fiction, and expository texts

  • Writing clear sentences and identifying subjects, predicates, and conjunctions

  • Grammar: multi-meaning words, idioms, independent/dependent clauses

  • Writing: Opinion, narrative, and informational paragraphs

Unit 2: Deepening Comprehension and Language

  • Summarizing and identifying main ideas and supporting details

  • Literary forms: poetry (lyric, haiku), fantasy, and biography

  • Figurative language: similes, metaphors, and idioms

  • Grammar: possessive nouns, verbs, interjections, appositives, and verb tenses

  • Note-taking skills: Key Word Outlines

Unit 3: Author’s Purpose and Literary Devices

  • Analyzing author’s point of view

  • Reading historical fiction, narrative poetry, and tall tales

  • Exploring theme, tone, and word choice

  • Grammar: pronouns, adjectives, contractions, and homophones

  • Note-taking: List Notes

Unit 4: Informational Reading & Fluency

  • Exploring theme, figurative language, and connotation/denotation

  • Reading narrative nonfiction and expository texts

  • Writing with fluency and strong voice

  • Grammar: Latin/Greek roots, prepositions, and adverbs

  • Poetry study: Free verse and imagery

  • Note-taking: Outline Skills

Unit 5: Creative Expression and Informational Texts

  • Deepening comprehension through summaries and text structure

  • Writing creatively using story dice prompts

  • Grammar: adjectives that compare, Greek roots, and articles

  • Note-taking: Concept Maps

Unit 6: Research and Academic Integrity

  • Exploring historical fiction, poetry, and nonfiction

  • Advanced grammar: prefixes, adverbs, metaphors, and prepositions

  • Research skills: avoiding plagiarism, using Cornell Notes

Units 7–9: Essay Writing Mastery

  • Narrative Essay: From brainstorming to final draft

  • Compare and Contrast Essay: Structure, revision, and publication

  • Persuasive Essay: Developing strong arguments and voice

Unit 10: Research Essay

  • Guided research process: evaluating sources, using search strategies

  • Outlining, drafting, and formatting a formal research essay

  • Peer review and final publishing
