Our 6th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum offers a complete year of engaging, standards-aligned instruction. Students will strengthen their skills in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking through a balance of classic literature, informational texts, and writing workshops.

Our all-inclusive 6th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) course offers a rich blend of reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills, aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Designed for homeschoolers, after-school enrichment, or academic support, this 36-week curriculum helps students sharpen their literacy skills with engaging visuals, interactive lessons, and age-appropriate content.

Each week includes carefully planned activities that develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing in a structured, engaging way. Throughout the year, students will explore a variety of texts and genres including fairy tales, poetry, nonfiction, biographies, and persuasive writing.

Week 1–2: Literary Foundations

  • Genres: Realistic & Historical Fiction

  • Skills: Compare & contrast, visualization, character, setting, and plot

  • Grammar: Sentence fragments, context clues, complex sentences

  • Vocabulary focus and reading response

Week 3–4: Informational Reading & Voice

  • Genres: Expository & Narrative Nonfiction

  • Skills: Main idea & key details, author’s point of view, similes & metaphors

  • Grammar: Clauses, run-ons, transitions

  • Writing Workshop: Paraphrasing, summarizing, plagiarism, and paragraph structure

Week 5–6: Informational Texts & Word Roots

  • Focus on Latin/Greek roots, inflectional endings

  • Genres: Expository & Historical Fiction

  • Writing: Adding details and evidence to writing

  • Grammar: Nouns, possessives, and text structure

Week 7–10: Narrative Essay

  • Genres: Lyric & Sonnet Poetry, Narrative Fiction

  • Skills: Predictions, theme, point of view, figurative language

  • Writing Workshop: Narrative essay from brainstorming to final share

Week 11–13: Informational Analysis

  • Genres: Realistic Fiction, Biography, Narrative Nonfiction

  • Skills: Theme, cause & effect, sequencing, ask & answer questions

  • Grammar: Verb tense, suffixes, synonyms/antonyms

  • Writing Workshop: Expository Essay

Week 14–16: Author’s Craft & Grammar Deep Dive

  • Genres: Expository, Biography, Drama, Free Verse

  • Skills: Author’s POV, transitions, idioms, homophones

  • Grammar: Pronouns, suffixes, dialogue

  • Writing Workshop: Expository Final Format

Week 17–19: Figurative Language & Poetry

  • Genres: Poetry (Free Verse, Narrative, Odes)

  • Skills: Theme, alliteration, imagery, sensory details

  • Grammar: Pronouns, subject-verb agreement

  • Writing Workshop: Persuasive Essay

Week 20–22: Persuasive Writing & Grammar

  • Genres: Mythology, Historical Fiction, Expository

  • Skills: Problem & solution, connotation vs. denotation, cause & effect

  • Grammar: Comparative adjectives, adages & proverbs, colons & semicolons

  • Writing Workshop: Persuasive Essay Final Draft

Week 23–25: Research Foundations

  • Genres: Informational & Expository Texts

  • Skills: Author's point of view, research skills, main idea

  • Grammar: Word choice, adverbs, homographs

  • Writing Workshop: Research 101 and Essay Development

Week 26–29: Research Essay

  • Skills: Outlining, source evaluation, citations, and note-taking

  • Writing: Drafting, revising, final formatting

  • Grammar: Sentence fluency, style, negatives

  • Writing Workshop: Final Research Essay

Week 30–32: Advanced Language & Fan Fiction

  • Genres: Expository, Narrative Nonfiction, Poetry

  • Skills: Theme, figurative language, sentence variety

  • Writing Workshop: Fan Fiction Writing Process

Week 33–35: Study Skills – Note-Taking

  • Learn & practice 5 styles:

    • Keyword Outline

    • List Notes

    • Concept Maps

    • Sketch Notes

    • Cornell Notes

Week 36: 🎉 Celebration Week

  • Reflect on learning, share favorite projects, and enjoy end-of-year games!
