50 Engaging Writing Prompts #3: What Is My Biggest Challenge?

Looking for engaging journal prompts for upper elementary and middle school students? This printable writing prompt helps students reflect on personal challenges, develop resilience, strengthen writing skills, and practice meaningful self-reflection.

Everyone faces challenges in life.  Some are easy to see, while others are internal. Challenges should not be considered negative or something to be ashamed of– they are opportunities for us to grow! When we take some time to understand what makes something difficult for us, we can learn to overcome it better

Today, you will reflect on a challenge you are facing and think about the person you want to become on the other side of it.

The hardest part is sometimes starting the climb.

Journal Prompt

What is a challenge you are facing right now or have faced recently? Describe what makes it difficult, how it has affected you, and what you are learning from it. What steps can you take to overcome this challenge?

Reflect on challenges.

Reflection Questions

Remember, these questions are to help you if you are stuck or want to reflect deeper.  You can answer some, all, or none.

  • What challenge comes to mind first?

  • Why is this challenge important for you?

  • How does it make you feel?

  • What have you already done to handle it?

  • Who encourages or helps you when things get hard?

  • What lesson do you hope to learn from this experience?

  • Imagine yourself a year from now. How do you hope you will look back on this challenge?

Growth can be difficult.

Why Does This Matter?

Challenges help us grow stronger, wiser, and more confident. They are not comfortable to go through, but every obstacle we overcome teaches us about ourselves. People who achieve great things are not usually the ones who do not struggle– they are the ones who keep moving forward no matter what comes along.

Strength grows one challenge at a time.

Vocabulary Word

Resilient (adjective)

Definition: Able to recover from difficulties and keep going even when life is hard.

Example: Even after failing the first test, Maya stayed resilient and kept studying until she succeeded.

Life is full of sensory details.

Writing Challenge: Sensory Details

Sensory details are words or phrases that appeal to the five senses– see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.

Ask, “What do I see/hear/smell/taste/feel?”

Instead of “I was nervous when I stood up to give my speech.”

Try, “My hands felt sweaty as I stood in front of the class, and I could hear my heart pounding while everyone’s eyes stared at me, waiting for me to start speaking.”

Use at least three sensory details or emotions to help your reader understand what your challenge feels like instead of simply telling them about it.

Keep going!

Does this quote change the way you think about failure? Explain your answer.

Looking back helps to see growth.

Bonus Writing Challenge

Write a letter to your future self explaining how you hope to overcome this challenge. Seal it away and read it again in six months or a year.

Difficult times lead to a bright future.

Keep Writing!
Every challenge is a part of your story and helps shape who you are.  Keep writing honestly, believing in yourself, and remembering that growth often happens in the hardest moments. The person you are becoming is so worth it!
