Every story is unique. What will you discover about your story?
Discovering the Story Only You Can Tell
Have you ever thought about your life as a story? Every person has a story unlike anyone else’s– including you. Even siblings do not have the exact same story, right? You have your own memories, talents, struggles, dreams, perspectives, and more. You can share interests and even have similar backgrounds, but your story is truly yours and one of a kind.
As humans, we spend an awful lot of time comparing ourselves to others, and that can lead us to forget to discover who we really are as individuals. Understanding yourself is one of the most important parts of life. It is also the greatest journey you will ever take. When you know your strengths, values, interests, and dreams, you can become more confident in making decisions and setting goals that matter to you.
This journal prompt has no wrong answers! It’s about exploring your thoughts honestly and discovering more about who you are. You may discover something new about yourself, or finally find the words to describe something you have always known.
Take your time. There are no grades. There is no pressure. There are only opportunities to grow!
Journal Prompt
If someone who had never met you asked, “Who are you?” what would you want them to know beyond your name, age, and appearance? Describe the person you are on the inside.
Reflection Questions
If you are not sure where to start, you can use these questions to help. You do not have to answer all of them. You do not have to answer any of them. You can answer them all. The page belongs to you!
What are three words that describe your personality?
What makes you feel happiest?
What activities make you lose track of time because you enjoy them so much?
What are you naturally good at?
What is something you're still learning or trying to improve?
What values are most important to you? (Kindness, honesty, courage, creativity, faith, perseverance, etc.)
What challenge has helped shape who you are today?
Who has influenced you the most, and why?
What do you hope people remember about you?
If your life were a book, what title would you give this chapter?
Why does this matter?
Learning who we are is a lifelong journey. Building self-awareness helps with confidence, wise decision-making, healthy relationships, and recognition of strengths. It can also show you where you would like to learn and grow. The better we understand ourselves, the better we can face challenges and make choices that show who we really are.
Great writers spend time observing their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, and behaviors. Journaling gives you a safe place to practice this important skill of self-observation.
So let loose. Explore who you are.
Vocabulary Word
Authentic(adjective)
Definition: Genuine; being true to who you really are instead of pretending to be someone else.
Example:Maria felt happiest when she was authentic and didn't worry about what others expected.
Challenge: Try using the word authentic somewhere in your journal entry.
Writing Challenge: Showing, not telling
Do not just tell your reader what you are like by writing, “I am kind.”
Show it.
Instead of writing, “I am kind.”
Try writing, “When I see someone drop something, I always try to help them pick it up because I know how embarrassing it can be to do that in front of a lot of people.”
Writers call this “showing, not telling,” and it is one of the most powerful skills you can learn. It helps your reader experience your story rather than simply read it. When you show it through personal examples, your writing becomes stronger and more memorable.
Inspirational Quote
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” – Oscar Wilde
What do you think this quote means? Do you agree or disagree? Explain why.
Bonus Writing Challenge
Imagine you're reading today’s journal entry five years from now. Write a paragraph answering this question:
What do you hope your future self will be proud of?
Keep Writing!
You don’t have to figure everything out today. Your story is still being written every single day, and every page helps tell the story of who you are becoming.
Ask yourself: “Did I write what I think people expect to hear– or did I write what I truly feel?”
The most meaningful writing comes from being honest with yourself.
